The summit of the Skuleberget mountain in Docksta is one of the top destinations for people visiting in Sweden the High Coast UNESCO world heritage.

The Skuleberget stands proud on its surrounding area and has bagged itself a mountain status even topping out at “only” 296 m above sea level.

It has the character of a real mountain and encompasses its characteristics:

  • at 286m a.s.l. on its summit, the world’s highest point of land to have been uplifted by a postglacial isostatic rebound

  • natural reserve

  • breathtaking views over the fjords and the islands of the archipelago, and over the surrounding mountains and forests

  • paths in the woods, walkable safely, and segments on large rocks of red Nordingrå granite

  • wide natural areas still wild and parts that became an astonishing playground for hikers, runners, climbers, and skiers

  • hosting ski slopes - with an unique seaview! - and a brand new chairlift on the sunny side of the mountain and, at its steep eastern slope, the climbing routes of the "Via Ferrata"

  • at its summit, few well positioned shelters and the Toppstugan

The #HighCoastRunner group named these five steep segments: “ELK, FOX, BEAR, EAGLE and LYNX”.

They are the “BIG5 uphill paths” of the Skuleberget.

Every walk or run - fast or slow - up to the summit following one of these trails have a proper meaning and will leave emotions in your memory.

The FOX path at the Skuleberget

This is the youngest path: it was born in 2017 and it is known as the “Höga Kusten Stigen”.

Facing to southwest, the segment starts strong from the first hundreds of meters in the wood, where it engages you on steeps stairs, roots and stones.

When you're just out of the woods, your track will be an imaginary line drawn on the large rocks that brings you up-up-up to the first peak at the Litoberget.

From there, it will be a never-ending up and down in the wood again, over rocks and terrain paths of stones and roots before to restart again to firmly climb up to the last technical segment that will slow you to see the Toppstugan at the summit of the Skuleberget.

The EAGLE path at the Skuleberget

This is the shortest and steepest segment to reach the summit following an almost vertical route on the east face of the mountain.

Starting from the museum, the path takes you directly to the top in just 800 meters, climbing big stones and steep steps of stairs fixed into the rocks.

On this segment, vertical runners and climbers are in their playground, but everyone will really enjoy this mission out of the comfort zone. Remember to have charged your camera: there are breathtaking views from up there that you can’t miss.

This is a one-way segment, from down to up: to walk it downhill is not recommended. Also wet conditions should have to be avoided, since this hike can become very difficult.

The ELK path at the Skuleberget

You'll love to run or walk this segment because the “old yellow" is probably the most preserved path.

It is one of the historic trails leading to the top of the mountain but now very few hikers know it and is rare to meet people up there even during the summer.

It's marked with yellow dots, on trees & stones and few remaining wooden poles.

The late afternoon and the evening in the summer is the best moment of the day to be there: the light that filters through the trees from west is magical. It's a wonderful segment if you like trailrunning in the real nordic nature.

Downhill it is very technical: a mix of steep segments and challenging trails into the wood. Rocks and roots to "manage" and continue changes of direction. It's 100% pure fun.

During raining days, a lot of water flows downstream on the trail. It happens also to have to jump over a tree, even large ones, that obstructed the path blown down by the wind. It's impossible to lose the flow during this sort of mindful running…

Here you are on the ski slopes at the westerly side of the mountain.

The BEAR segment follows the steep terrain road that runs up to the summit from the start of the chairlift (Skulebergets Linbana). It is steep: it starts steep, continues steep, and finishes eve steeper at the summit by reaching the Toppstugan.

Runners that raced the 43k of Höga Kusten Trail remember this uphill: it represents the shocking final vertical segment that brings them to the finish line (and the second ascend to the peak of the mountain that the competitors run in the last 5k of this fantastic ultra trail).

If you are in Docksta, don't miss to run this segment, following the northerly path that starts from the east side of the mountain.

If you pass the High Coast tourist center and the museum "Naturum" following the Höga Kusten Leden to North, you find where the LYNX starts: it's a challenging, very steep segment that is shaped on rocks and roots and climbs up in the woods.

It is marked with blue dots of paint on trees and stones. To dominate it, you have to run, walk and also climb, keeping on changing the pace.

If it's raining hard, you find a lot of mud and water on the trail. In winter, if the snow is deep, it can be really challenging to find the track (check if someone that really knows it have been there marking with his steps the route in the snow before to venture alone up there).

High Coast runners like this two kilometers uphill trail because there is a sort of tension that brings you up despite the rocks, roots and stones. Nevertheless, in summer it is unusual to find many people there: the trail is very technical and to keep effective your proceeding uphill you need to adapt fast your running to approach the different ground surfaces until the last meters of the segment at the peak.

High Coast Runner’s tips to get the most of the Skuleberget Mount

Roots, mud, rocks and stones, branches and trees, berries, lichens and flowers, leaves and pine needles, ice, snow, water, wind, the sound of your steps and the rhythm of your breathing.

Take your time to walk or run at the Skule: every path is different, with nuances that you can grasp by opening your real senses. Enjoy the outdoors.

 
  • DRINKING WATER: you don’t need to carry large supplies to hydrate yourself because at the summit you can stock up on drinking water at the sink which is available to the hikers you find at the back of the Toppstugan cabin.

  • TOILETS: at the Visitor Center and in the large parking area at the feet of the mountain close to the E4 road. At the summit, close to the Toppstugan and the chairlift's station.

SHOES: the paths are rough: wear a pair with the necessary grip (you will need it a lot, particularly on the downhill or with wet and icy conditions). You will run on ever-changing surfaces, over rocks and stones, encountering roots almost everywhere but also dirt and mud. On the snow, specific outsoles with deep lugs or metallic studs and a good pair of gaiters are reccommended.

3 days in Docksta: discovering its classic day tours (without a car or a boat)

If you are lucky to spend your holiday in the High Coast, the Skuleskogen national park, the Ulvön island, and the Skuleberget mountain have to keep a priority place into your summer’s bucket list.

In Docksta, you find the perfect “base camp” to start visit them.



You can even leave your personal means of transport at rest - your own car or boat is not essential to discover the surroundings of Docksta.

Here you have some transportation alternatives:

  • by free bus service, you can reach the nearest entrances of the park;

  • by ferry from Docksta, you can reach the typical fishing village of Ulvön;

  • by walking you can conquer the summit of the Skuleberget just following its beautiful paths or taking the chairlift (if you are not confident with hiking uphill).

 

DAY 1#

Hiking the Skuleskogen best trails

The National Park is the target of a full day spent hiking and enjoying the beauty of the Höga Kusten world heritage outdoors.

The bus starts from Kustlådan campsite 2km south of the village and stops at Docksta Marina on the E4 (just 50 meters from our piers), then it picks up people at the campsites on the southwest side of the Skuleberget and at the museum & Tourist High Coast Center on the east side, and has a last stop to the campsite at Veåsand before to leave you at the southern entrance of the park. From there, you enter some of the best trails and the most popular spots.

One spot recommended:

Start visiting the beaches at the Kälaviken bay and walk the suggestive path in the forest alongside the coastline and step on its beautiful spots seaside. In the morning particularly, it’s an amazing walk with the rays of the low sun entering in the wood from the sea.

 

DAY 2#

Cruising to the charming Ulvön

It is the ideal trip to discover the beauty of the archipelago and the magic of a renowned fishing village: for its traditional houses and docks and for the delicacy of its fermented fish, the surströmming.

During the summer, the ferry M/S Kusttrafik starts from the harbor in Docksta every morning at 10am. The cruise along the Docksta and Ullångersfjärden covers the nautical miles to Ulvön in one hour while people enjoy the view of the natural coastline from the deck.

Don't miss the short walk to the step up at the Lotsberget hill to the high viewpoint over the village and the harbor or an incursion on the coastline close to the bay of Flågstängsberget that faces toward the open sea to east.

 

DAY 3#

Up-up-up to the Skuleberget

Walking its trails or taking the chairlift to reach the summit, from the top of the mountain the views over the surroundings are always astonishing.

If you're based in Docksta, the slopes of the mountain are one step away from your front door (and from the piers of the Marina, too). But you can also have an enjoyable ride, lock your bike and start hiking, taking the chairlift, or visiting the museum about the High Coast World Heritage, or… climbing up a route of the Via Ferrata!

ONE SPOT RECOMMENDED:

The Naturum Höga Kusten Museum lies at the foot of the Skuleberget mountain about 3 km walking or biking north of the village: if you want to know more about the highest uplift of the land in the world, and geology & landscapes of the High Coast, start there!

 

Staying in Docksta even few days during your holiday, you will notice that there is no shortage of things to discover and do around here outdoor.

Play to sail: starting strategy basics for your rcsailboat regatta

Your rc yacht is already sailing the racing area and the next race is about to start.

The race will begin with a series of warning signals, followed by a starting signal.

Usually, the starting line is drawn between two buoys, and so is also for rc sailing.

The starting area is delimited by an imaginary line between these two floating marks, that separates the pre-start side from the course side, on the first beat. The yachts will cross this line from the pre-start area, sailing in the direction of the first mark of the course, all together at the starting signal.

Here are few basic steps to set your effective starting strategy routine. Having a plan is key.

 

Be prepared and think ahead first

 
Can you answer these 3 questions?

”What's the favored tack on the first leg?”

2#
”Where is the upwind end of the starting line?”

Related important question:

“Is it useful to start there to reach the favored tack?”

3#
What's your plan to be into the preferred position on the line at the start?

The right start position facilitates to reach the favorite side of the windward leg first.

The place you're taking along the starting line should be consistent with where you're planning to sail on the first beat.

Balance carefully the weight of taking risks in order to be the first boat at the start: keep in mind that a successful position at the first (windward) mark is more related to a right positioning that the yacht achieve on the first leg than any position or advantage achieved at the moment of the start.

So, plan to position your boat in order to be successfully able to enter into a wind-shift from the right position vs. your competitors, or to sail in the side of the course where the waves are more favorable or simply where the wind seems blowing more.

Search for the best wind to determine the favored side of the racing course.

Do practice to analyze and measure the line and the starting area: how far is your boat from the line? Do you notice trends in the sailing of the boats you see around you? Do you see gaps and hot spots?

Sail on the racing area - and on the starting zone particularly, in time to collect the information you need to define your plan.

 

How to detect the upwind end of the starting line?


Luff head-to-wind on the middle of the line - checking if the wind blows perpendicularly to the line (even shorter starting lines are rarely square to the wind) - the bow of your boat will point closer to the end of the line that is more upwind.

Compare sail trim while sailing along the starting line on both tacks: start from the right mark toward the other one on the left, on the way, trim the sails accordingly for the wind direction. When you reach the second mark on the line, don't touch the sails trimming, jibe and turn around the mark returning toward the right mark sailing again on the starting line.

Now check your sails: 

if the sails are luffing = the right mark is upwind (starboard end is favorited)

if the sails are over trimmed = the left mark is upwind (port end is favorited)

Compare sail trim while sailing along the starting line on both tacks


If you don't reach to determine the upwind end of the line merely by identifying the direction of the wind, look around the sailing angles of the other boats: look to see at which end the boats seem to come off the line better.

If the wind isn't perpendicular to the start line, there will be boats sailing close hauled more perpendicular too: if they sail on port tack, is favorited the left end; if they are on starboard tack, is the right mark that is more upwind.

By the way, the start line could also be well positioned (or be extremely short) so no ends are really advantageous.

ACHIEVING WIND CLEAR (by luffing of boat windward, or separating and rising from leeward boats)


AVOID COLLISIONS

 

You need a confident knowledge of the rules (make sure to be aware of the basic racing rules for rc sailing), and to have a clear overview of close situations before they become potentially problems or incidents.

 

Keep in mind these priorities after the gun shot

  • SPEED, SPEED, SPEED!

  • CLEAR AIR = free of the back wind of yachts to leeward, free of the blanket of yachts to windward

  • KEEP FREEDOM to sail toward the desired side of the course (i.e. avoid to be pinned on starboard tack unable to follow your pre set plan).

 

An “ideal start" means to have your boat at the favorite point of the line at the start signal, sailing at full speed in clear air and free from the interferences of other opponents: free of the blanket of yachts to windward and free of the backwind of yachts to leeward.

Overnight in Docksta in a boathouse along the Höga Kusten trail

 

You will arrive at Docksta right along the 7th section of your hike along the Höga Kusten Leden.

If you like the idea to stay by the water’s edge, head to this classic nordic boathouse on the seafront in Docksta that you can actually sleep in.

This hikers friendly hut is formally a real boathouse where just its small fisherman room have been converted to offer a comfortable overnight accommodation.

The boathouse has a covered berth and its private outdoor pier facing south on the fjord and a small beach.

To daily or long distance sailors visiting the area of the Skuleberget mountain and the Skuleskogen national park during their holidays in the High Coast, the guest harbor in Docksta provides over 15 single berths for boats of any sizes.

 

At your arrival at Docksta Havet gästhamn, if possible, we assist you during your approach at the harbour and help you while you are mooring your boat.

We assign your own berthing space, so you not have to share the space on the dock with another boat.

All boats places have proper marine bollards or eye bolts suitable for safely mooring pleasure boats.

 
 

We assign the boat places considering the boat dimensions in relation with the spaces availability, but also the winds conditions or, when is possible, to facilitate the crew in getting on and off the boat on the piers (mooring alongside).

If you’re concerned about the ability of your crew to maneuver into the allocated berth, it’s worth asking for an alternative.

Please note, some berths that may seem available because they are not occupied, may actually be booked: if possible, we indicate them with a "booked" sign :)

DOCK YOUR BOAT AT A SAFE GÄSTHAMN

In case you’re wondering why sailors need a safe harbor: a safe harbor is the guarantee of a safe place to dock your boat without having to worry about the rough waters, bad weather conditions or other yachts moored nearby.

In a safe harbor, you can kick back, relax, and enjoy your stay at the marina without safety concerns.

Docksta Havet Gästhamn is one of the harbor in the Höga Kusten with the safest moorings where to berth a yacht. It’s a sailors friendly marina located in Docksta in the heart the High Coast World Heritage.

Our marina is nestled deeper in the cove, providing your boat with more protection since the hills protect the piers, waves are not so big and there is less wind. So if you’re on the hunt for a safe harbor during your sailing holiday in the Hüoga Kusten, your are welcome! :)

How to reach the Skuleskogen National Park by bus from Docksta

It is easier to reach the Skuleskogen from the marina in Docksta. If your are cruising the Höga Kusten, leave your boat safely moored, take the bus and take your walk to the national park.

At Docksta Havet sailors find dedicated services and moorings to safely leave their boat during their exploring walks of the surroundings.

From the pier of Docksta Havet, now you can head to the nearest park entrances (named “Entré Syd” and “Entré Väst”) also by bus.

The southerly entrance of Skuleskogen is the nearest to the Slåttdals crevice (Slåttdalskrevan).

The bus line is called Världsarvsbussen and the bus ticket is free.

The nearest bus stops from the marina in Docksta are:

“Busshpl E4:an Docksta” (Docksta Marina) that is just 50m from our guest harbour, and “Friluftsbyn” or “Skuleberget Naturum”.

From there the bus takes you to the Skuleskogens Nationalpark, where start the well marked paths of varying degrees of difficulty that lead you to everything worth seeing, within forests, hills, bays.

Main attractions are: Hiking on The spectacular views over the national park´s dramatic landscape and the surrounding High Coast.

The 7 meters wide, 30 meters deep “Hell Gab” crevice, which cleaves the Slåttdal mountain in two.

Skuleskogen is one of the few remaining large, ancient forests of the coastal region. The red coloured Nordingrå granite cliffs, the large uplift coast and the coniferous forest, with rare species of lichens, characterize per park.

How to become confident with the starting procedures of a radio sailing regatta

RC Sailors race their radio-controlled sailboats under the Racing Rules of Sailing, as changed by a dedicated appendix: this previous blog post highlighted 10 essential basic rules on which a regatta is based.

The racing rules of radio sailing set a sequence of visual signals and sound signals (to indicate flag changes) to warn sailors of the departure of a regatta.

At the start, all signals - the timing count down particularly - shall be made orally or by other audible sounds.


Rc sailing races shall be started using these signals at one- minute intervals:

  • WARNING

  • PREPARTORY

  • STARTING

(each signal shall be timed from the beginning of its sound).

 

RC sailing practiciants very offen set the warning, preparatory and starting moments with vocal warnings only. This is allowed by the changes of the appendix of the sailing rules: no visual signals are required unless specified in the sailing instructions.

During the (preparatory) minute before the starting signal, additional sound or oral signals shall be made at ten-second intervals: 50” … 40” … 30” … 20”…

During the final ten seconds at one-second intervals: 10 . 9 . 8 . 7 . 6 . 5 . 4 . 3 . 2 . 1 . START (vocal or sound starting signal).

 

At Play2Sail Academy, we usually prefere to adopt the procedure for start that integrates visual signals (flags) and the sounds, following what happens during a big boats race: this because for any sailor, flags are a (fun) piece of the game and we like to keep the mood.

Sail races are governed with flags.

At Play2Sail Arena, the sailors can see the simple diagram that explains the starting instructions, with flags and sounds signals (and all the diagrams of the racing courses) on our "notice of race board".

The notice of race board is easily accessible and clearly visible within the "control area" on the pier: it is placed on a wall of the docks (a magic place to sit with a cup of coffee during the day looking at Dockstafjärden and the DF65 sailboats in action :) close to the racing area where the marks of sailing course are just few meters far and not so far from the "launching area" that is located at the very beginning of the floating wharfs.

What happens with flags and sounds at the start, and during the pre-start of a rc sailing race?

During a race and for any signal concerning the race, these flags are defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing but the signal can be modified by the Sailing Instructions that you will receive at your regatta.

The raising (hoisting) or removing of a flag (visual signal) is accompanied by the emission of a sound signal to draw attention to the new signal.

The type of the sound signal (one short sound, two short sounds, one long sound, etc.) is described by the rule according to the type of signal.

If during a race between sailboats (with crew on board :) flags are usually exposed on the mast of the race committee boat, in rc sailing the flags are usually showed near the starting line at the ground.

 

Like with big sailboats, rc sail races shall be started by using the following signals and times shall be taken from the visual signals (the absence of a sound signal shall be disregarded).

The start procedure that we adopt for sail racing at Play2Sail Arena is showed below.

During the “preparatory” minute before the starting signal, we count down at ten-second intervals, and during the final ten seconds at one-second intervals.

 

Flags are used also to show which kind of course the competitors have to sail.

There are flags to remember the side boats have to round the floating marks:

SAIL RACE FLAGS RED AND GREEN
  • the RED flag indicates to keep the marks to port (to the left)

  • the GREEN flag to keep them to starboard (to the right)

 

There are flags used as recall (visual) signals:

  • X flag means individual recall

    It is displayed (with one sound) when one or more boats did not start correctly and must return and do a proper start. The X flag shall be displayed until all such boats have sailed completely to the pre-start side of the of the starting line. The sound signal is in addition to the start sound signal.

  • First Substitute pennant means general recall, the flag is displayed with •• two sounds (one sound when lowered).

    A general recall may occur when at the starting signal the race committee is unable to identify boats that are on the course side over the starting line, or subject to one of the starting penalties, or there has been an error in the starting procedure.
    All boats have to return and then a new start sequence will begin. The new warning signal shall be made 1 minute after the first substitute signal is removed (one sound). The two sound signals when the first substitute is displayed are in addition to the start sound signal.
