Top hiking trails

Skuleberget: a Mountain of choices

Let me tell you about one of my favorite spots in the High Coast - Skuleberget Mountain. Here, you'll find five unique paths to the summit, each with its own character and charm.

The "Eagle" path (Grottsstigen) is for the adventurous (and more fit) souls, featuring the historic Kungsgrottan cave and a thrilling 250m “climb”. If you prefer panoramic views and wild stretches in the woods, try the "Lynx" path (Östra bergsstigen), offering stunning fjord vistas along its gentler ascent.

Both trails are leading you to a summit 295 meters above sea level. The reward? Some of the most breathtaking views of the High Coast you'll ever see.

WHY I RECOMMEND THIS HIKE: Experience the world's highest coastline, a geological marvel offering unparalleled vistas. Located just 2km from our marina in Docksta, Skuleberget is perfectly positioned near the Naturum Höga Kusten Museum. It's an ideal spot to witness the remarkable landscape shaped by the world's highest land uplift.

BEST TIME TO VISIT: I particularly love these views during the golden hours - early morning or late afternoon when the light paints the landscape in warm colors. Summer evenings are magical here, with the midnight sun creating an unforgettable atmosphere.

Skuleskogen National Park: A Wilderness Adventure

Let me introduce you to one of the High Coast's most remarkable treasures - Skuleskogen National Park. As someone who's hiked these trails countless times, I can tell you it's an experience you won't want to miss.

My recommended park's signature hike is an 11.4km loop that takes you through some of Sweden's most dramatic landscapes. The highlight? The impressive Slåttdalsskrevan, a massive crevice that never fails to amaze its visitors.

WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL: Starting from the Southern Entrance (Entré Syd), you'll discover ancient forests, rocky shores, and stunning viewpoints. The trail leads you to Slåttdalsberget's summit, where a flat red granite terrace offers breathtaking views of the High Coast archipelago, it's a testament to the region's unique geological history. Diverse flora and fauna along its trails are a true gem of the High Coast.

MY PERSONAL TIPS: ✓ Pack light but smart: water, snacks, and sturdy shoes are essential ✓ Bring a physical map (don't rely solely on your phone) ✓ Allow 4-6 hours for the main loop ✓ Look for the orange/blue markers along the trail

NEED HELP PLANNING? Whether you're staying with us at Docksta Havet or just passing through, I'm happy to share more detailed hiking advice. Don't miss to check out our complete trail guide on my blog post that guides you, step by step, along the Skuleskogen nicest paths >

High Coast Views: Panoramic Peaks Highlight

With Skuleberget and Slåttsalsberget summits, I add some truly spectacular viewpoints that never fail to take my breath away. Let me share my top picks with you!

  • Vårdkallberget Mount: This is my go-to spot for introducing visitors to the High Coast's wilderness. Embark on a 2.5 km single track through a lush pine forest, starting in Myre (Docksta), offering stunning stunning 360-degree view of the Archipelago.

  • Download a free info-map about the trail to Vårdkallberget: from Dicksta, you can walk or bike to the “Antenna”, and start there your adventure.

  • Getsvedjeberget Mount: A short steep ascent to this mount offers perfect photo opportunities, rewarding hikers with sweeping views of Norrfjärden from the unique view point “Predikstolen”.

  • Fäberget Mount: Accessible via the Höga Kusten Leden trail, Fäberget provides a breathtaking observation point at the intersection of Dockstafjärden and Ullångerfjärden.

Outdoor adventures in Docksta: a local's guide

Living in the High Coast has taught me that adventure comes in many forms. Let me share with you the incredible experiences waiting at your doorstep when you stay at Docksta Havet Base Camp.

Hiking Experiences Around Docksta Havet

I always recommend starting with our incredible hiking trails. From gentle nature walks to challenging mountain paths, there's something for everyone.

Let me share my favorite hiking trails around Docksta Havet. As your local guide, I've explored each path countless times, and they all offer something unique.

Skuleberget: Our Majestic Mountain

Just 2km from our marina stands Skuleberget, our iconic mountain rising 295 meters above sea level. Its summit holds something remarkable - a metal band marking the world's highest shoreline, 286 meters above today's coast. Each year, this land rises 8mm, continuing its ancient story of glacial rebound.

Skuleskogen National Park: Pure Wilderness

Our crown jewel spans 30 square kilometers of pristine wilderness. My favorite route is the 11.4km loop trail, featuring the breathtaking Slåttdalsskrevan crevice. This 5-6 hour hike offers unforgettable views, and you can leave your boat safely at our marina while exploring.

Vårdkallberget: The Perfect Afternoon Hike

For a shorter adventure, I recommend Vårdkallberget. In just 2 hours, you'll discover: ✓ Serene pine forests ✓ The innovative ArkNat shelter "He" ✓ Ancient signal fire locations ✓ Panoramic coastal views

Per-Olsbo Trail: Family excursion

For families or gentle hiking enthusiasts, the 3.8km Per-Olsbo trail offers: ✓ Easy, accessible paths ✓ Perfect viewpoints for coffee breaks ✓ Rich local history along the way

Experience Via Ferrata: A Thrilling Climb with Amazing Views

Let me tell you about one of our most exciting adventures here at the High Coast! Right next to the Naturum Visitor's Center, Skuleberget's east face offers four incredible Via Ferrata routes. Don't worry if you're new to climbing - they've got you covered! The steel cables along the routes keep you safely secured while you experience the thrill of ascending the mountain face. The panoramic views of our archipelago and Skuleskogen National Park are simply breathtaking. Never tried Via Ferrata before? No problem! You can rent all the necessary safety equipment right there.

Summer Nights & Music at Skuleberget

During the warmer months, Skuleberget's east face transforms into a magical outdoor concert venue. Just a short walk or bike ride from our marina, these open-air concerts create something truly special.

Picture this: live music floating through the air as the midnight sun paints the sky in golden hues, all against the dramatic backdrop of our mountain. I've seen countless guests mesmerized by these evenings - there's something uniquely magical about experiencing music under the Nordic summer sky.

Trail Running in the High Coast: A Runner's Paradise

As an avid runner myself, let me share why our trails hold a special place in my heart! Here at Docksta, we're blessed with perfect conditions for trail running - long Nordic summer days, diverse terrain, and views that make every run memorable.

From our base camp, you can access some incredible running routes. I particularly love our #BIG5 trails, where you'll find yourself running through pristine forests, over ancient red granite rocks, and along paths with breathtaking sea views. Whether you choose the challenging Skuleberget routes or the serene forest trails of Skuleskogen, each run here tells its own story.

Need route suggestions or running buddies? Drop me a message at +46 76 3136628 - I'm always excited to share my favorite trails!

Discover Ulvön: A Treasure of the High Coast Archipelago

Let me tell you about just a short ferry ride from our marina lies Ulvön Island - a place that perfectly captures the essence of the High Coast's heritage.

I can tell you there's something magical about approaching the island's harbor, lined with traditional red cottages. This is the birthplace of surströmming (our famous fermented herring), and while it might not be everyone's cup of tea, it's definitely a conversation starter!

Walking through the old fishing village, you'll discover charming paths leading to spectacular viewpoints. Don't miss the historic chapel and museum - they tell fascinating stories of island life through the centuries. The ferry departs regularly from Docksta during summer, making it perfect for a day trip.

Family Adventures in Docksta: Walks for Everyone

Want my personal recommendations for your family? I've discovered the perfect mix of paths that combine beautiful views with easy walking for all ages.

From our base camp, you can choose from several delightful routes: let me share some of my favorite family-friendly trails around Docksta! A gentle stroll along the sunny side of Docksta fjord. The charming path to Per Olsbo wind shelter (perfect for a family picnic!). Easy forest walks with plenty of rest spots. Coastal paths where kids can explore and play. Each trail offers something special - whether it's spotting local wildlife, finding perfect photo spots, or discovering hidden picnic places. I've seen countless families create wonderful memories on these paths, starting from our piers.

Let me share one of my favorite family walks that combines history with beautiful landscapes! Starting from the village, I love taking families to discover the charming medieval Vibyggerå Old Church in Sätra - a medieval gem that tells fascinating stories of our region.

This stone church, dating back to the late Middle Ages, is full of treasures that captivate both adults and children. The church has its own interesting tale - it was actually abandoned in 1874 but found new life after restoration in 1916

Linbana chairlift and Toppstugan at Skuleberget Mount

Here's a local tip for making your summit experience at Skuleberget visit even more special! While hiking is my favorite way to reach Skuleberget's summit, I understand not everyone shares my enthusiasm for steep trails. That's why I often recommend the scenic chair lift (Linbana) that operates from late spring through early autumn - it makes our magnificent views accessible to everyone. At the summit of Skuleberget, you'll find Toppstugan, a cozy mountain café where you can relax and enjoy breathtaking views of the High Coast. The Kalottstigen path around the summit area offers perfect spots for a packed lunch or a moment of peaceful reflection while soaking in the spectacular views of our UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Whether you've hiked up or taken the lift, the experience of being at the top of Skuleberget is truly unforgettable!

Nature connection & wellness in the High Coast

Let me share something special about our UNESCO World Heritage site that goes beyond its stunning views. Here in the High Coast, where land has been rising from the sea for 10,000 years, you'll discover a natural sanctuary for wellness and modern wellbeing.

What makes exercising here special is our setting. Imagine doing your morning stretches with panoramic views of the archipelago and our forests, or completing your run as the sun paints the sky in golden hues. Our natural terrain offers varied challenges for all fitness levels.

In today's fast-paced world, we all need a digital detox - a chance to disconnect from screens and reconnect with ourselves. Our ancient landscape, shaped by ice ages and continuing to rise 8mm each year, provides the perfect setting to practice mindfulness, deep breathing, and natural meditation. Many guests tell me they find more clarity here in a few days than months of city life.

Planning your holiday in the High Coast: what to know about a majestic World Heritage site at your doorstep

Welcome to the Höga Kusten, or High Coast, in Sweden—a UNESCO World Heritage site celebrated for its extraordinary geological features, particularly the phenomenon of land uplift. This Nordic wonder, recognized in 2000, is renowned for having the world's highest known land uplift of 285 meters, a testament to the immense power of glaciation and postglacial rebound.

A Geological Marvel

Let me take you back approximately 20,000 years, when the High Coast was buried under massive glaciers. As these glaciers melted around 9,600 years ago, the land began a remarkable rebound, lifting nearly 800 meters. This ongoing geological process has sculpted a dynamic landscape with sweeping mountain lines, steep sea cliffs, and meandering creeks. Spanning 142,500 hectares, including 80,000 hectares of marine areas, the High Coast offers invaluable insights into Earth's geological history and natural processes.

A Rich Tapestry of Life and History

Beyond its geological significance, the High Coast is a vibrant ecosystem, home to diverse plant and animal species, including unique alpine flora and rare deciduous trees. For over 7,000 years, human settlements have thrived here, leaving behind a rich tapestry of archaeological remains from various historical periods.

A Haven for Adventure and Exploration

The High Coast is a paradise for nature enthusiasts and adventurers alike. Whether you're sailing the Baltic Sea's notable shorelines or hiking the scenic trails of Skuleskogen National Park and Skuleberget Mountain, you'll be immersed in the breathtaking beauty of this region. The panoramic segments of the trails leading to the summit offer stunning views of the sea and surrounding fjords, while Skuleberget's peak provides a unique vantage point to witness the landscape uplifted by isostatic rebound.

Whether you're drawn by the allure of its geological wonders, the richness of its natural and cultural heritage, or the thrill of its outdoor adventures, the High Coast promises an unforgettable experience for all who visit.
