🌊 Chapter 1 | #HighCoastSailor Mini-Guide

Discover Höga Kusten by boat: where UNESCO waters meet the midnight sun

"Let me share something personal with you. Back in 2005, I first set sail in these waters, and like many sailors before me, I thought I was just finding a nice spot to moor and resupply my galley. Instead, I discovered what was going to become my home and my life's passion - these breathtaking coastlines, with their mountains, bays, and islands. That was the summer before we - my wife Anna, my brother Michele, and I - began to restructure the piers and services to relaunch the marina in Docksta. I'm Tommaso, and I want to tell you why sailing the heart of the High Coast archipelago changed everything for me - and why it might do the same for you."

What makes these waters different

You know those rare moments when you're at the helm and everything just feels... different? That's what sailing the High Coast is like, but it's not just about the sailing. Let me explain:

The Light That Never Ends

Picture this: it's 11 PM, you're anchored in a protected cove, and there's still enough light to read your book on deck. The midnight sun isn't just a phenomenon here - it's a gift to sailors. You can navigate safely almost around the clock, watching the golden light play on red granite cliffs that rise straight from the sea.

Nature's Greatest Engineering

Every year, these coastlines rise 8mm higher - you're literally sailing through a changing landscape. Those cliffs you're passing? They were once the seabed. That mountain you see ahead while sailing into Dockstafjärden towards our piers? It's risen 286 meters since the last ice age. You're not just sailing; you're witnessing geology in action.

A Different Kind of Solitude

Even in July (yes, peak season), you'll often find yourself alone in pristine anchorages. No fighting for mooring spots, no crowded harbors. And when you sail along the coastline, are almost every time just you, your boat, and some of the most dramatic natural coastline you'll ever see in the Baltic.

Local Insight 👉 When sailors ask me why the High Coast waters sometimes feel so peaceful and uncrowded, I smile and tell them: "Check the mountain trails - that's where you'll find the crews, exploring our UNESCO World Heritage by foot!"

Nordic Nature at Your Bow

Sailing the High Coast offers something I've never experienced anywhere else in my years at sea - nature isn't just around you, it embraces your boat. Here, you're not just passing by the landscape; you're sailing through it. The deep fjords allow you to cruise so close to the shoreline that you can smell the pine forests. While mooring in Dockstafjärden, you'll hear birdsong from the mountain slopes of Skuleberget. Your boat literally rests at the doorstep of hiking trails that lead to some of Sweden's most breathtaking viewpoints.

What makes it truly special is how the sea and land merge here. One moment you're navigating between islands, the next you're dropping anchor beneath towering cliffs where eagles nest. You can step from your cockpit onto trails that wind through ancient forests, leading to peaks that offer views of your boat, now a tiny speck in the vast beauty of the archipelago. This isn't just another harbor - it's where maritime adventure meets wilderness exploration.

Explore the High Coast on your boat

When you moor your boat along the High Coast, something different happens. These aren't harbors you'll remember just for a seaside café or a fish restaurant with a view. Sure, those exist, but what will truly fill the pages of your logbook - what your crew will talk about for years to come - are the natural wonders waiting at your fingertips.

More Than Just a Harbor

Step off your boat onto our pier, and you're already on the path to adventure. The trails that begin where your mooring lines end will lead you to places that will stay forever in your crew's memories. Here in Docksta, your harbor isn't just a stop along the way - it's a gateway to experiences that transform a simple sailing holiday into an epic journey of discovery.

Why This Matters

You know what makes a great sailing destination? It's not just the waters or the winds - it's the stories you'll tell afterward. The Höga Kusten gives you those stories: midnight sun sailing through archipelago waters, hiking to viewpoints where you can photograph your boat from ancient sea levels now lifted high above, watching seals play in your wake as eagles soar overhead, or mooring late in the season under the enchanting northern lights dancing above your mast.

And Docksta? We're not just a marina - we're sailors who decided to make this magnificent place your home away from home, a familiar safe harbor, and nothing makes us happier than helping fellow sailors discover its magic.

Ready to start your High Coast story? Drop me a line - I'm always here to help fellow sailors plan their perfect adventure.

⛰️ Chapter 2 | #HighCoastSailor Mini-Guide

From your mooring to mountain peaks: a Sailor's Handbook to High Coast hiking

As a sailor and your host at Docksta Havet, I've watched countless crews discover something magical: some of the High Coast's most spectacular hikes start right from your mooring. Let me share their favorite trails that make Docksta the perfect base for combining sailing and hiking adventures.

Why hike the High Coast?

Imagine this: you've just secured your lines in our protected harbor. Looking up, you see mountains that were once islands, shaped by the last ice age and still rising from the sea at a rate of 8mm per year. Vårdkallberget, Fäberget, and the southerly side of the Skuleberget Mount (Litoberget). The mount just over the village of Docksta, Herrestaberget, that you see sailing in the fjord, is protecting your mooring from the West. This is the heart of the High Coast (Höga Kusten) - a UNESCO World Heritage site where every trail tells a story of geological wonder.

From Sea Level to Summit: Your Crew's Mountain Adventure

You know what I love most about our location? Within minutes of securing your lines, your crew can be starting an unforgettable mountain adventure. Here's my insider's guide to making the most of the best family adventures waiting just steps from your mooring.

While the mountains of the High Coast typically rise around 300 meters above sea level - what might technically be classified as hills - their dramatic character and sheer rise from the Baltic waters earn them their rightful name as mountains. This unique topography, where peaks appear to emerge directly from the sea, creates a distinctive sailing experience found nowhere else in the Baltic: imagine navigating waters where what was once seabed now stands as proud mountain faces above your deck.

Experience Höga Kusten outdoor: 3 must-do hikes from your mooring

1#

Skuleberget (295m) - The Classic Summit

This is where most of our sailing guests begin their High Coast hiking adventure, and for good reason. The mountain that dominates your view from the fjord offers several distinct trails to reach the summit. Here below are highlighted the most popular segments that crews follow during this recommended hike from the marina.

Getting There: From our marina in Docksta, it's an easy 2km walk or bike ride to the trailhead. Follow the terrain road east to reach Naturum Höga Kusten Visitor Centre - your starting point for this adventure.

Crew Tip 👉 The museum itself is worth a visit, offering fascinating insights about the High Coast World Heritage site. The interactive exhibits about land uplift will make your hike even more meaningful.

Grottstigen (EAGLE Path): An exciting ascent to the summit along a scenic 800-meter segment

✓ Perfect for: Families with older kids (12+) ✓ Highlights: Ancient sea caves, stunning fjord views ✓ Distance from marina: 15-20 minutes to trailhead ✓ Access: Walk or bike along the terrain road to the mountain's east side, where you'll find the High Coast Tourist Center and Naturum museum

Trail Tips 👉 • Best enjoyed with proper hiking shoes • More comfortable in dry conditions • Perfect for morning hikes before the day gets warm • Great photo opportunities of the fjords from above

Pro Tips 👉 • Start early to enjoy the morning light • Bring water and snacks • Check current conditions at the Club House • Ask about our favorite photo spots

Östra Bergstigen (LYNX Path): A forested adventure with 227m elevation gain

✓ Perfect for: Adventurous families ✓ Access: From Naturum, continue North along the Höga Kusten Trail, the path starts a few hundred meters ahead ✓ Features: Forest path, rocky sections ✓ Highlights: Stunning panoramic views over the National Park area and the forests to the North

Crew tip 👉 Pack extra water - perfect picnic spot halfway up!

Summit Experience: Kalottstigen Loop. Once you reach the top at 295m, you're in for something special.

The Kalottstigen loop isn't just another summit trail - it's a journey through time along an ancient Baltic shoreline.

👉 Following the red dots 🔴 painted on trees and rocks, you'll circle Skuleberget's summit at 286 meters above sea level. This relatively easy path traces the exact level where waves once crashed against these rocks over 10,000 years ago, right after the last ice age. Every step along this loop tells the story of the world's highest land uplift - imagine standing where seabirds once soared and waves once rolled!

Along the Ancient Shore: • Multiple rest spots with different perspectives • Perfect places for your Skogspaus moments • Natural rock formations shaped by ancient waves • Spots where seals once basked (now 295m up!)

360° Panoramic Views: • South: Your boat in Docksta marina, looking tiny below • East: The vast Baltic Sea, now far beneath you • North: Skuleskogen National Park's wilderness • West: The dramatic mountain landscape shaped by ice

Pro tip 👉 Take your time exploring the loop - each stop tells part of the story of how the land rose from the sea. Perfect spots for both photos and peaceful moments!

Höga Kusten Stigen (FOX Path): The perfect finale to your summit adventure! This sunny, south-facing trail offers stunning panoramas of the fjords as you descend.

✓ Perfect for: All hiking levels ✓ Highlights: Continuous views of Norrfjärden and your boat ✓ Features: Several viewpoints, sunny exposure, gentle descent ✓ Best time: Afternoon light perfect for photos

Scenic Descent Route: • Start from Litoberget viewpoint • Follow the well-marked FOX signs • Multiple photo spots overlooking the marina • Optional connection to Naturum museum for bike pickup

Panoramic Highlights 👉 • Norrfjärden's blue waters below • Your boat in Docksta marina • South-facing fjord views • Sunset colors in late afternoon

Trail Options: • Full descent to Docksta • Connection path to Naturum museum • Link to Höga Kusten Leden for longer hikes

Crew tip 👉 This is our recommended descent route - the south-facing path means better grip and stunning light for photos. Perfect for that last look at your boat from above!

Naturum Museum Tips 👉 • Perfect starting point for your hike. Lock there your bike before to start your excursion • Trail maps available • Interactive exhibitions about the area • Restrooms and water refill station

Vårdkallberget (264m a.s.l.) - The Wild Heart

This is my personal favorite for sailing families seeking a true Nordic wilderness experience. Rich in history - once a strategic point for signal fires warning of approaching enemies - today it offers one of the most rewarding hikes in the High Coast.

The Trail: ✓ Perfect for: Adventure-seeking families ✓ Starting point: Myre antenna (easily reached by bike) ✓ Terrain: Single-track through lush pine forest ✓ Summit reward: The innovative "He" wind shelter

Summit Experience: At the innovative "He" wind shelter (designed by architecture students in 2019), you'll discover: • 360° views of the archipelago • Dockstafjärden's blue expanse • Ullångerfjärden's sailing routes • Perfect spot for route planning

Rest Spots: • Ancient shoreline viewpoint with wave-polished stones • Natural rock formations perfect for coffee breaks • Forest clearings with panoramic views • "He" shelter for lunch with a view

Per-Olsbo Shelter Trail - the right place to re-connect

This gentle trail along the Höga Kusten Leden combines medieval history with stunning views, making it our favorite recommendation for families seeking an authentic High Coast experience.

Trail Story: The adventure begins at the 13th-century Vibyggerå church in Sätra, a medieval gem that has witnessed centuries of coastal life. Built in the late 1200s, it even served as Docksta's main church after lightning struck the newer one!

The Journey: ✓ Distance: 3.8km round trip ✓ Perfect for: Families with young children ✓ Terrain: Well-marked, gentle paths ✓ Reward: The "magic" wind shelter

Trail Highlights: • Medieval church starting point • Forest paths with fjord glimpses • Historic coastal viewpoints • Per-Olsbo shelter (built 1997 by local craftsmen Gunvor Eriksson, Åke Olson, Lilly, and Karl Mellberg)

Perfect Skogspaus Spots 🌲 • Ancient forest clearings • Quiet paths through pine woods • The shelter's peaceful setting • Panoramic rest points

Views from the Shelter: • North: Your boat at marina with Skuleberget backdrop • West: Dockstafjärden's blue waters • East: Vårdkallberget's wild profile • South: Forested hills and hidden coves

Family-Friendly Features: • Easy terrain for little explorers • Plenty of natural rest stops • Interesting features to discover • Safe paths for all ages

Crew Tips 👉 • Perfect morning or afternoon walk • Great for family picnics • Ideal first High Coast hike • Beautiful in all weather

Pro Tips 👉 • Check church opening hours at Club House • Pack lunch for the shelter • Bring your camera • Allow time to explore the church grounds

ℹ️ Detailed information and maps about the short walk along the Höga Kusten Leden is available in this blog post >

Planning Your Hike

Best Times to Hit the Trails:

  • Early Morning: Clearest views, coolest temperatures to approach the Skuleberget from the easterly segments (Eagle and Lynx), or to walk to the shelter from the village

  • Late Afternoon: Perfect for sunset photos, hiking up from the Fox path (Höga Kusten Stigen), and to enjoy the panoramas from the summit of Skuleberget

  • After Rain: Exceptional visibility of the coastline (but pay attention because the paths become slippery)

🎒 What to Pack for Your Crew: ✓ Good walking shoes (no flip-flops!) ✓ Water bottle (refill at our marina or at Toppstugan and the museum of Skuleberget) ✓ Light snacks (trust me, not the kids only will need them) ✓ Weather-appropriate layers

A Family-Friendly Spot your Crew will Love:

Naturum Höga Kusten, just a short walk from our moorings, this interactive museum is perfect for: ✓ Learning about local wildlife ✓ Understanding the unique land uplift ✓ Kids' activities and exhibitions ✓ Rainy day exploration

Making Hikes Kid-Friendly: ✓ Break the hike into segments ✓ Play spot-the-boat from viewpoints ✓ Create a nature scavenger hunt ✓ Take plenty of photo breaks

 Family Crew Tips:

For Little Sailors (5-8 years): ✓ Start with the easier forest paths ✓ Bring a small adventure notebook ✓ Play "spot the trail markers" ✓ Regular snack breaks are key!

Höga Kusten Explorer: A Sailor's Secret-Map to Outdoor Adventures

From #HighCoastSailor’s Logbook:

Every great maritime adventure starts with a special map. Not the kind you find in guidebooks, but the ones passed between sailors, marked with X's and annotations from those who know the waters best. After nearly 20 years of exploring these waters and trails, let me share our local crew's secret map to the outdoor treasures you'll find right in the heart of the High Coast UNESCO World Heritage site.

📍 Base Camp Coordinates: Docksta Havet AB, 10 Hamnen, 87396 Docksta ⚓ Your Adventure Hub: Sailor's Club House ✉️ Chart Your Course: dockstahavet@gmail.com | +46 76 3136628

Like any good treasure map, timing is everything

Dawn to dusk: unfolding your adventure map to a sailor's perfect day from the Base Camp

Morning Magic (05:00-09:00)

“You know what I love most about early mornings at our marina? It's watching sailors lace up their trail shoes for a summit run while the rest of the crew is still sleeping, or seeing families already plan their day at the Sailor's Club House, spreading maps across the table as kids point excitedly at Skuleberget's peak. After nearly 20 years here, these moments still make me smile.”

Picture this: You're up before your crew, the fjord mirror-calm, and Skuleberget's eastern face catching the first light. Our piers and floating wharfs are already bathed in sunlight - we're on the sunny side of the fjord, where the sun rises incredibly early over the antenna at Myre. This is when I often meet solo runner heading out for what we call our "Summit Sprint" - a quick trail run up to Skuleberget's peak along the Höga Kusten stigen trail. There's something special about reaching the first peak at Litoberget and looking down at your boat, now just a tiny speck in the vast fjord below, while the rest of the world is still waking up.

For Early Birds 👉 ✓ Secret sunrise spot coordinates (I'll mark them on your map) ✓ Best morning photography locations ✓ Quiet trails before the day tourists arrive

Crew-TESTED Adventures (09:00-16:00)

“Remember Paula, a Finnish sailor with her family who visited last summer? They turned their planned one-day stop into a weekend of adventures. Her kids still talk about the "treasure map" we created together at the Sailor's Club House, leading them on a nature scavenger hunt while learning about the world's highest coastline.”

👍 Family with kids interactive nature trails (age-appropriate routes):

  • Per Olsbo wind shelter walk for little explorers before noon (with a pic-nic plan)

  • Feeling the magic of the ancient forests of the national park Skuleskogen along it's seaside trails and its swimming spots!

  • Vårdkallberget's gentle wild trail spotting an hidden lake and the "He" refuge

  • It’s a rainy day? Refuge and have fun discovering playful exhibits and engaging activities at Naturum museum

👍 Junior / Teen explorer challenges:

  • Climbing experience at Via Ferrata, riding to the east face of Skuleberget by bike

  • Get top panoramic views and explore the cave, with a fun hike along the EAGLE path, the challenging shortest segment that brings you to the peak

  • Predik Micro-Triathlon : ride, vertical “walk-run” to Getsvedjeberget

👍 Family-friendly summit attempts:

  • Chair lift adventure to Toppstugan, Kalottstigen loop for all ages

  • Bike ride to Naturum museum, and then hiking up to the summit along the LYNX path with rest stops

  • Discovering Höga Kusten Stigen with Litoberget's viewpoints

  • The country side at the Old Church and the segment of the Höga Kusten Leden discovering the Per Olsbo shelter peaceful grounds

Want a tip for a “super training” mission?

“Predikstolen" Micro-Triathlon

  • Here's a local favorite that combines three amazing elements of the High Coast into one epic outdoor training session. A perfect blend of biking, hiking, and swimming that showcases the unique High Coast landscape - from sea level to stunning viewpoint, ending with a refreshing dip!

  • The Challenge: 🚲 Bike: pleasant ride from marina to Getsvedjeberget trailhead 🏃‍♂️ Hike: summit push to "Predikstolen" viewpoint 🏊‍♂️ Swim: refreshing dip at the beach below

Training Benefits 👉 • Cross training • Multi-terrain conditioning • Elevation training • Recovery swimming • Mental strength building

  • Recovery Spots 👉 • Beach rest point • Natural viewpoint breaks • Forest meditation spots • Skogspaus locations along the trail

  • This active excursion at Getsvedjeberget is perfect for sailors looking to explore our UNESCO World Heritage while getting a serious funny workout! 💪

Evening Magic (16:00-21:00)

“Let me share one of our best-kept secrets - when the day visitors head home, that's when Skuleberget reveals its true magic. Picture this: the tourist buses have left Naturum, the chair lift ends its courses, the Via Ferrata climbers have descended, and suddenly, the mountain belongs to us again. As the day last visitors' voices fade away, you'll be alone where nature's evening symphony begin - the call of sea eagles, the whisper of wind through ancient pines.”

  • THE SAILOR’S SUNSET SUMMIT - Around 16:00, when most visitors are leaving, I often meet sailors at the Club House for what we call our "Evening Ascent." We take the sunny FOX trail, stopping at hidden viewpoints that most tourists never discover. By the time we reach Kalottstigen at the summit, the light has started to transform everything.

  • MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM (JUNE-JULY) - There's nothing quite like a midsummer evening at the summit. The sun hangs low on the horizon, painting the archipelago in gold and rose. From up here, you can spot your boat in the marina, now bathed in that special Nordic light that seems to last forever. On clear nights, you might catch sight of other sailing boats, tiny white specks moving through the golden fjords.

  • THE PERFECT EVENING SKOGSPAUS - Let me share my favorite evening ritual. Just along the Kalottstigen loop, there's a spot we call "The Skipper's Rest" - a natural rock formation that creates the perfect backrest. Here's what I suggest: ✓ Pack light (a book, your camera) ✓ Bring a thermos of coffee or tea ✓ Take one of our hammocks in case you like to have a longer and more comfortable Skogspaus ✓ Don't forget an extra layer (even in summer)

#HighCoastSailor Secret 👉 During midsummer weeks, we sometimes organize impromptu evening gatherings at the best spots along the Kalottstigen. Guests share stories over a thermo of coffee while watching the sun paint the sky in impossible colors. Just ask at the Club House if there's anything planned during your stay, or simply organise it with your crew and the neighbours moored at the main pier.

Pro Tips 👉 Remember, there's no rush up here. Some of our most memorable evenings have been spent simply sitting in peace, watching the play of light on water as day slowly, ever so slowly, fades into the gentle and bright Nordic night.

Want to join a special evening summit? 👉 Stop by the Club House around 16:00 - I'll be happy to share more secrets about making the most of these magical mountain evenings.

Discover Skuleskogen National Park from Docksta marina. Complete hiking guide with trails, geological features, and seasonal tips. Safe mooring while you explore Sweden's High Coast.

Skuleskogen national park - A sailor's guide to the High Coast's crown jewel

Ever wondered why sailors often extend their stay in Docksta? Here's a secret: it's not just about our safe harbor - it's about what lies beyond. Skuleskogen National Park, the heart of the High Coast World Heritage site, offers an adventure that transforms a regular sailing stop into an unforgettable journey.

The Geological Marvel

Imagine walking along a coastline that was underwater 10,000 years ago. At Skuleskogen, you're not just hiking - you're traveling through time. The world's highest land uplift (isostatic rebound) - a process still ongoing at about 8mm per year! - has created a landscape where ancient sea caves now perch high above the water, and former islands have become mountain peaks

Key Geological Features:Slåttdalsskrevan: A 200m long, 40m deep crevice • Ancient shorelines: Visible at different elevations • Wave-carved caves: Now perched high in the cliffs • Rounded coastal rocks: Smoothed by ancient seas • "Giant's Kettles": Formed by glacial meltwaters

Why Skuleskogen Is Special:

  • 30km of marked trails through pristine wilderness

  • Ancient coastlines now perched high above sea level

  • Dramatic cliffs and hidden valleys

  • Rich wildlife and untouched forests

A Sailor's Tale: Discovering Skuleskogen

Every hiking trail has its stories. Here's one that captures the essence of what makes Skuleskogen special for sailors. When Michael and Helen sailed from Kiel to the High Coast in early summer 2024, they didn't expect their most memorable Baltic Sea adventure would happen on land...

From Kiel to Skuleskogen: a German sailor's unexpected adventure

As told by Michael W., 🇩🇪 S/Y Nordwind

“When Helen and I planned our Baltic sailing adventure from Kiel to the Höga Kusten, Skuleskogen National Park was just another waypoint on our chart. Little did we know it would become the highlight of our journey, thanks to an unexpected act of kindness at Docksta Havet marina”.

A Windy Welcome

Beginning June, brought challenging northerly winds to Höga Kusten. After a demanding passage from Härnösand, finding Docksta's sheltered harbor was a relief. Our Hanse 495 needed a safe berth for a few days while the weather settled. "Perfect time to explore inland," I thought, until we learned the summer bus service to Skuleskogen hadn't started yet.

The Marina Host's Solution

During our first morning coffee at the Sailor's Club House, we mentioned our disappointment about missing the national park to Tommaso, the marina host. "Leave your boat to me," he said with a warm smile, "I'll drive you to the south entrance myself." Such spontaneous hospitality - so rare in modern marinas!

Into the Wilderness

Setting off at 8:30 AM with Tommaso's hand-drawn trail course on the map, we set off for what would become our most memorable hiking experience in Scandinavia. The early morning light filtered through the coastal forest, creating an ethereal atmosphere we'd never seen before. The first section of the trail, cleverly designed to hug the coastline, let the eastern sun rays dance through the pine branches, illuminating the moss-covered rocks in a way that made Helen reach for her camera every few minutes.

A Trail of Discoveries

The path revealed its secrets gradually. Ancient sea caves, now perched impossibly high above the water, told the story of the land's dramatic rise. "It's like walking through geological time," Helen noted in our logbook, her geologist's eye catching details I might have missed.

The trail through ancient forest reminded us of fairy tales, but nothing prepared us for Slåttdalsskrevan - a dramatic crevice that would look more at home in the Alps than by the sea.

The Summit Revelation

Reaching Slåttdalsberget's terrace, we understood why Tommaso insisted on an early start. The vast expanse of the High Coast archipelago spread before us - a maze of islands, fjords, and forested peaks that no nautical chart could truly capture. While we couldn't spot our boat in Docksta from here, the panoramic view of the entire High Coast was beyond anything we'd imagined. The flat terrace of red granite made a perfect spot for our packed lunch, as we traced potential sailing routes through the islands below. "In all our Baltic sailing," Helen remarked, "we've never seen landscape quite like this."

The Unexpected Encounter

At Slåttdalsberget's granite terrace, we met Björn and Eva, a Swedish couple from Stockholm who had swapped their sailing life for a motor-home adventure. As we shared our trail mix and stories, they pulled out a well-worn hiking map covered in handwritten notes from years of High Coast exploration.

"We used to sail here every summer," Eva reminisced, tracing the coastline with her finger. "First with our Hallberg-Rassy, always mooring in different harbors. But you know what? We found ourselves spending more time on the trails than on the water. The High Coast has this effect on you - it draws you inland, up these ancient hills."

Björn, pointing towards the South, shared their favorite memory: "Ten years ago, we moored right there in Docksta. Planned to stay two night, ended up staying almost a week. Each morning, a new trail called to us. Now we come back with our motor-home, but we always tell other sailors: don't just admire these mountains from your cockpit - climb them!"

Their enthusiasm was contagious. As they marked their favorite viewpoints on our map, Eva added with a knowing smile, "The funny part? Like sailing, the trails are always open - but you still need to check the weather forecast!"

What struck us most wasn't just the dramatic views or the pristine trails, but finding ourselves part of an informal community of sailors-turned-hikers!

Back to Base

After six hours of hiking, Tommaso's friendly face greeted us at the pickup point. "How was your 'berg-wanderung'?" he asked in attempted German, genuinely interested in our experience. Our boat was just as we left it, though the wind had picked up considerably - we'd never have attempted the hike without knowing she was in good hands.

A Sailor's Reflection

That evening in our cockpit, watching the midnight suns paint Skuleberget in gold, we realized why Docksta felt special. It's not just a marina - it's a gateway to experiences we'd never expected to find on a coastal sailing trip. As Helen noted in our logbook: "Came for safe harbor, found wilderness adventure."

Practical Tips from Our Experience: • Trust the local knowledge - trail recommendations were perfect • Start early - the morning light on the coastline is spectacular • Follow the tip to pack extra water and extra snacks - the terrain is more demanding than it looks on paper • Don't rush - the views deserve time for contemplation • Bring a good camera - your sailing friends back home won't believe these views

Why We'll Return

We've sailed many harbors, but few offer this combination of secure mooring and wilderness access. Next time, we're planning a longer stay to explore more of Höga Kusten's trails. As I told Tommaso when we reluctantly departed: "You've shown us that the best sailing adventures sometimes happen on land."

Your turn to explore

Like every sailor who visits Skuleskogen, you'll have your own unique story to tell. Whether it's an early morning start with magical sunlight through the pines, or a chance encounter at Slåttdalsberget's summit - some adventures are best experienced firsthand.

Docksta fjord and the Docks from the main pier of the marina

Chapter 5 | #HighCoastSailor Mini-Guide

The Sailor's Club House: a living room for High Coast adventurers

“Every marina has a harbor office. But here at Docksta Havet, we wanted something different - a place where stories begin, friendships form, and adventures take shape. Our Sailor’s Club House isn't just another marina building; it stands proudly at the head of our docks, in what was once a grand boathouse more than fifty years ago. Like all our waterfront buildings, it still rests above the sea, the gentle lapping of waves beneath its wooden floors a constant reminder of its maritime soul.

Those old wooden beams that once sheltered fishing boats now embrace a different kind of maritime spirit, while the sea continues its timeless dance below. Here, in this 100-square-meter space where water meets wood, we've created the heart of a unique community where sailors become hikers and hikers dream of the sea.

Step inside, and feel the subtle lapping of the water beneath the floor - a gentle reminder that you're not just visiting a lounge, you're experiencing a piece of living maritime heritage. The rhythm of the waves under the dock wooden planks creates a natural soundtrack to your High Coast adventure planning”.

⛵️🏔️

The explorer's lounge by the sea

Where land and sea meet below your feet… where sailors become hikers and hikers dream of the sea…

“Picture this: Early morning light streaming through windows that frame Dockstafjärden. The aroma of freshly brewed Italian espresso mingles with the salty breeze. A Finnish crew planning their hike to Skuleberget spreads out their map on the table, while a Swedish couple browses through our guest book. Someone's sharing yesterday's sunset photos, and yes - there's always room for one more at our coffee corner.

Every object here tells a story. Like that bright green and white burgee from the Finnish Sailing Club, brought by the crews of nine yachts who gathered here to hike Skuleberget together, and the faded Royal Danish Yacht Club flag gifted by a couple of veteran sailors, who sailed their beautifully maintained 1962 Sparkman & Stephens 38' up the High Coast one magical midsummer. Or the well-thumbed "Baltic Sea Routes" guide, left by the family from Kiel, who enriched its margins with carefully penciled notes about hidden anchorages and the best lingon and blueberry spots along our hiking trails”.

Our Club House isn't just a space - it's a living, ever-changing collection of High Coast memories, where every corner holds a piece of the High Coast sailors' growing story.

Here, between Nik Ferrando's artwork and our wall of sailing charts and trail maps, you'll find more than just information - you'll discover your next High Coast adventure.

Maritime memorabilia

Walking in, you'll notice our wall of sailing memories first - colorful burgees from visiting boats, each with its own tale of how it found its way to our harbor. Below them, our guest book has grown since the first season in 2006 into a multilingual testimony of maritime and hiking adventures, each page enriched by notes from previous visitors to the Base Camp.

The Adventure Planning Station

By the large windows overlooking Dockstafjärden, tables stand ready where countless High Coast excursions have taken shape. Here, over an espresso (always free, always Italian), you'll find our collection of detailed trail maps and wealth of local knowledge. Watch how a simple question about Skuleskogen National Park often turns into an animated conversation with other guests, each sharing their favorite viewpoints and hidden gems. During the peaceful hours when our guests are out exploring trails, the space returns to its serene state - perfect for digital nomads seeking a quiet workspace or for those wanting to simply sit and watch boats pass by on Dockstafjärden.

The Living Room

The sofas face the sea, creating a peaceful nook surrounded by Nik Ferrando's maritime art and our collection of sailing posters. It's a cozy spot perfect for a quiet morning read or planning your next High Coast adventure. Our nautical library houses a collection of sailing guides, maritime magazines, and the book-sharing corner with novels that guests often exchange. While some books travel onward with new readers, our collection of local guides and High Coast literature remains available for all guests to enjoy. During rainy mornings, you might find someone lost in a book, while the gentle sound of waves beneath the floor provides a soothing backdrop. When hikers return from their adventures, this space transforms into a gathering spot where stories flow as freely as the coffee.

The Souvenir Boutique Corner

Tucked in a sun-lit corner of our Explorer's Lounge, our boutique tells the story of High Coast craftsmanship and maritime heritage. Here, handcrafted wool beanies by TRPL design catch the light with their reflective patterns - each one created with early morning hikers, trail runners, and evening sailors in mind. These aren't just hats; they're essential companions for those magical sunrise moments at Skuleberget or late-summer sailing under the stars.

You'll discover carefully selected pieces of Italian artisanal costume jewelry and women's fashion - a touch of Mediterranean elegance that somehow feels right at home here in the High Coast. Perhaps it's because, like our waters, they carry stories of sun and salt.

But the heart of our collection beats in our limited-edition #TAGMUG series. Each mug is born from a High Coast Sailor’s story - some celebrate quiet Skogspaus moments in ancient forests, others capture the thrill of completing a #BIG5 summit. We design each one here, inspired by our sailing experiences or by the stories our guests bring back from their adventures. Watch closely, and you might spot the mug that matches the story you're about to create.

Whether it's a reflective beanie that will guide you safely along twilight trails, or a colored mug that commemorates your High Coast journey, each piece carries a fragment of our shared adventures. Like the High Coast itself, Each piece is selected to be more than just a souvenir - they're tangible memories of time spent in our special corner of Sweden.

The Adventure Gear corner

Tucked along one wall, our adventure gear station helps turn High Coast dreams into reality. Mountain bikes stand ready for rent (100 SEK/day) - perfect for a quick ride to the museum, exploring Skuleberget's base, or discovering hidden village corners. While many sailing crews bring their folding bikes aboard, our sturdy MTBs offer a great alternative for spontaneous explorations.

Need Nordic walking poles for your trail adventure? Just ask - we're happy to lend them at no cost. And for those seeking a deeper forest connection, our Skogspaus hammock kits (100 SEK/day) invite you to experience the High Coast's ancient woodlands in true Nordic style.

Our map collection covers everything from detailed Skuleskogen National Park trails to specific Skuleberget routes, plus our own custom-made local hiking guides. Whether you're planning a quick village stroll or a full-day mountain adventure, you'll find the perfect map for your journey.

Welcome Point

Our check-in area doubles as an adventure planning hub. While handling the practicalities of your stay, we'll share those special local insights that don't appear in any guide. Here, sailors discover hidden anchorages, hikers uncover unmarked viewpoints, and unexpected trails reveal themselves - each destined to become a cherished memory of your High Coast journey.

Whether you're mooring your boat, checking into our accommodations, or simply seeking local advice, this is where we help transform a simple stay into an adventure. This is where your High Coast story begins.

A Space That Adapts

The rhythm of our Sailor's Club House changes with the hours, like the tides below our wooden floors. Early risers gather for weather reports over their first Italian espresso, while midday might find trail runners mapping their #BIG5 segments. Digital nomads work quietly by the sea-facing windows, occasionally pausing to watch boats navigate Dockstafjärden.

As the day unfolds, you might walk in on impromptu gatherings - sailors sharing cruising insights or hikers marking their discoveries on maps. When evening approaches, our space transforms into a cozy haven where tomorrow's adventures take shape. The sofas fill with guests sharing Skuleskogen stories and sailing plans, all against the backdrop of the setting sun over our marina.

The Heart of Docksta Havet

This isn't just a club house - it's where High Coast adventures begin, where friendships form, and where every visitor becomes part of our ongoing story. Whether you're planning tomorrow's hike, sharing today's sailing tales, or just enjoying a quiet moment with a good book and better coffee, you're always welcome here.

Sailors’ tales from our ☕ coffee corner

⛵️ The Finnish Family

"We discovered the real meaning of 'mountain' here. Our children still talk about the morning hot chocolate while planning climbing adventures with their new Swedish friends. The Club House became our living room for almost a week - base camp for explorations in the morning, gathering spot for trail stories in the evening." As told by Pia and Timo, 🇫🇮 S/Y Tuuli

⛵️ The Digital Nomad

"As a remote worker, finding a marina with both WiFi and a proper workspace is rare. But the Club House offered something more valuable - a community. Between client calls, I'd join the morning coffee discussions about trail conditions or help other sailors plan their High Coast adventures." As told by Lisa, 🇩🇪 S/Y Wanderlust

⛵️ The #BIG5 Inspiration

"Originally stopped just to wait out bad weather, but the maps of the #BIG5 Challenge on the Club House walls caught our eye. Three days later, we'd completed two segments, made friends with a Swedish hiking group, and our sailing schedule? Well, some things are more important than sticking to a plan. That's what this place teaches you." Klaus and Sophie, 🇦🇹 S/Y Aventure

⛵️ The Art of Slow Sailing

"We spotted Nik Ferrando's art on the walls during our first morning coffee. By evening, we were part of an impromptu gathering where another sailing crew and two hiker planned a joint expedition to the national park. Now his print hangs in our home in Helsinki, reminding us of those magical connections." Mikko and Leena, 🇫🇮 S/Y Sisu

⛵️ The Marine Biologist's Tale

“As a marine biologist, I sailed here to study the High Coast's unique post-glacial uplift. The Sailor's Club House - where local knowledge flows as freely as the Italian espresso - became my unexpected workshop space. Between research sessions and video calls with my UK team, I found myself explaining sea level changes to curious hikers while learning about mountain flora from them. The community here sparked something special: two unforgettable days exploring Skuleskogen's trails with my Dutch neighbors from the adjacent mooring, their sailing expertise complementing my scientific knowledge. This place has a way of transforming everyone into both teacher and student.” Emma and Lisa, 🇬🇧 S/Y Blue Light

⛵️ The Unexpected Community

"The most beautiful moments happened in the evenings. After a day of hiking Skuleskogen, we'd return to find other crews gathered on the sofas, sharing routes and stories. Our kids would be reading sailing adventures from the book-sharing shelf while we planned the next day's trails using the maps on the wall. It's not just a club house - it's where sailors meet the mountains." The Johansson Family, 🇸🇪 🛥️ Exploring the High Coast Archipelago

🎁 Chapter 7 | #HighCoastSailor Mini-Guide

Sailor’s Souvenirs to bring a memory of Höga Kusten at home

⛵️🎨

Every sailing journey leaves its mark on us. Sometimes it's a memory of a perfect sunset at anchor, other times it's that moment when mountain peaks emerge from morning mist.

“As a sailor and graphic designer who fell in love with the High Coast, I wanted to capture these moments in something more tangible than photographs.”

The Birth of #TAGMUG design

Our collection started with a simple idea: what if every morning coffee could remind us of a special moment at sea? Each #TAGMUG design emerges from real sailing stories - that first glimpse of Skuleberget from your deck, the thrill of completing a #BIG5 uphill segment to its summit, or those peaceful walks after a Skogspaus when forest meets fjord. Every #TAGMUG features an exclusive design, making it as unique as your own sailing journey.

But we wanted to infuse these mugs with more than just memories. Drawing from our sailing expertise and Play2Sail academy experience, we created designs that blend classic nautical themes with practical knowledge. From the International Code of Signals to visual guides showing how wind shifts create 'lifts' and 'headers', each mug becomes a source of sailing wisdom.

Some designs illustrate racing rules at crossing points, while others demonstrate different points of sail or explain essential maneuvers like tacking and jibing. It's our way of sharing maritime knowledge - one coffee break at a time.

Among our most cherished designs is the "High Coast Sailor" collection. These mugs tell stories of the Höga Kusten itself, where mountains meet sea, and where sailor-explorers leave traces of their memories. These dedicated mugs capture these moments in five unique designs, from Skuleberget's guiding silhouette to hidden forest trails that start at the water's edge. Each piece tells a story of UNESCO's highest coastline, and it is more than just a mug - it's a fragment of High Coast history and a reminder of your own sailing adventures in these extraordinary waters.

Sailing Knowledge as Art

Our info-posters began as my personal sailing notes, evolved into teaching tools at our Play2Sail academy, and finally became art pieces that blend maritime knowledge with High Coast beauty. Each 50x70 cm poster is more than decoration - it's a piece of sailing wisdom you can frame.

Where sea trails meet mountain paths

🗺️⛵️

Every sailor knows that the best adventures often begin where the anchor drops. Our 50x70 cm High Coast map posters started as a sailor's dream - marking not just anchorages and approaches, but also those magical spots where boat paths become hiking trails. From Skuleberget's majestic profile to Skuleskogen's hidden coves, each map tells stories of both maritime heritage and mountain exploration.

These aren't just decorative pieces - they're planning tools, memory keepers, and adventure catalysts all in one.

These posters become uniquely yours. Use colored markers to trace your sailing approaches, highlight those perfect spots where hiking trails meet your anchorage, or note wind patterns in different fjords. Add your photos of that sunrise summit after a night at anchor, pin memories of your outdoor achievements, or note where you found the best Skogspaus spot after a morning hike.

Sailing art meets maritime design

⛵️🎨

Where nautical heritage meets contemporary aesthetics - our Play2Sail collection transforms maritime wisdom into sophisticated wall art. Each 50x70 cm premium poster features our exclusive designs, where sailing's timeless elements become striking visual statements.

The collection reimagines classic nautical concepts through a minimalist lens - from the elegant geometry of points of sail to the dynamic patterns of wind shifts. Racing maneuvers transform into abstract compositions, while fundamental sailing principles become conversation-starting design elements. Each piece is thoughtfully crafted to complement modern interiors while telling stories of maritime expertise.

Perfect for the captain's study, yacht club lounges, or any space seeking that subtle nautical touch, these museum-quality prints on fine matte paper bring sophisticated maritime style home. Whether mounted individually or as a curated series, they create an immediate connection to the sailing world through clean, contemporary design.

Crafted with Care & Purpose

🌱

Our global cloud production network creates each piece on demand, close to its destination. This thoughtful approach reduces our carbon footprint while ensuring every mug and poster maintains its artisanal quality. No warehouses, no excess - just authentic designs waiting to tell your High Coast story.

Sailor's shore base choice: Höga Kusten waterfront accommodations

The best stories about our holiday rentals come from those who know the High Coast from both perspectives - as sailors and as land explorers. Here's what happens when our maritime guests discover the comfort of solid ground while keeping their connection to the sea:

Stories from shore: when sailors stay longer

The Runner's Tale: “After many summers mooring in Docksta, we finally tried the guest apartment of the marina during a longer weekend for the Höga Kusten Trail running race. Having a comfortable base for the challenge, one of us ran the 43k, the other the Twin Peaks distances - was a brilliant choice - especially when we could watch the amazing view of the fjord from the panoramic bed over the empty moorings the morning after our runs, looking out over the peaceful autumn moorings.” Henrik and Eva, 🇫🇮 S/Y Merituuli | Regular summer sailor guests and now #HighCoastRunner members

The Maintenance Break Discovery: "The Boathouse became our temporary home while our 34' yacht waited in Hudiksvall for engine maintenance. We reached the marina by bus and found our waterside accommodation perfect as a base for three days of High Coast exploration. From here, we conquered the Via Ferrata at Skuleberget and hiked the National Park trails - all while the sound of waves beneath the floorboards kept our sailing spirit alive, even on land." Jens and Marie, 🇩🇪 S/Y Nordlicht | World Heritage Explorers & Archipelago Adventure finishers

The Return Journey: “We first discovered Docksta by boat while sailing from Stockholm a few summers ago. This early spring, we returned with friends, staying in the Guest and Dock Houses for a hiking adventure. Experiencing the High Coast both by sea and by land made us appreciate this UNESCO heritage in entirely new ways." The Bergman family, 🇸🇪 S/Y Vindöga | Stockholm archipelago sailors

💻 Work & Nature: A Different Kind of Office 🌲

You know what's becoming quite special here at the marina? Seeing sailors discovering a new way to blend work and adventure. Just last summer, I met a German skipper from Stockholm who turned his Sailor's Club House morning calls into afternoon hikes at Skuleberget. Our free WiFi and espresso coffee have become a bit of a legend among remote workers - there's something about joining a video meeting with mountains rising behind you that makes work feel different. Some guests even make the most of our Skogspaus concept between tasks - nothing beats a hammock break in the forest to refresh your mind! Whether you're a digital nomad looking for a unique workspace or a team wanting to combine strategy sessions with sailing, these unique waters and trails create a pretty special office setup. It's amazing to see how the High Coast's rising landscape can lift both boats and creative thinking.

📝 Chapter 9 | #HighCoastSailor Mini-Guide

A Note for a Sailor ⛵ visiting Höga Kusten

[ 💌 from Docksta Havet ⚓ Marina ]

Hey there, dear Sailors-Explorers,

I'm writing this from our Sailor's Club House, where I spend most of my Summer evenings. You know, it's funny – I never planned to write a guide. It just happened naturally after so many conversations over coffee here at the guest harbour in Docksta, with sailors asking about hiking trails and hikers curious about boat life.

The other day, I was highlighting a hike over the map of Skuleskogen National Park for a Finnish family who had just come back from visiting the Naturum Museum at Skuleberget. The parents looked energized from their forest walk and Skogspaus break - you know that special feeling you get after spending time in nature. Their kids were already playing cards with a German couple who had sailed in that morning, and it hit me – this is what makes our marina different. It's this simple mix of sea and mountains, of sailors and hikers, of stories shared over an espresso.

Some people ask why I included so much hiking information in this sailing guide. Well, that's just how it works here in the High Coast. One day you're anchored in a beautiful bay, the next you're up on a mountain trail looking down at your boat. It's quite something to think your boat getting smaller and smaller as you climb up Skuleberget – gives you a whole new perspective on things.

This guide started as notes I'd share with guests: outdoor adventures around the marina, some local tips, things I wish I'd known when I first arrived here. Nothing fancy, just practical stuff mixed with some nice experiences worth sharing. Like that perfect spot at the Skuleskogen National Park to watch the Archipelago, or that hidden single track through pine forest and blueberry bushes where you can take a re-energizing Skogspaus in one of our hammocks with a view over the fjords, or where to find the best morning coffee (hint: you're always welcome at our Club House for an espresso and maybe check out our nautical souvenirs). And you know what makes sailing here even more special? These unique waters - shaped by the world's highest land uplift since the Ice Age - they're still rising about 8mm every year!

When you get here in Docksta, drop by the Club House for a coffee. If I'm not there, I'm probably helping someone at the dock or up showing someone a trail start point. Just send me a message – I'm always around.

Looking forward to meeting you,

Tommaso :)

P.S. 👉 Don't worry if your plans change while you're here. Most people end up staying longer than they planned, and that's perfectly fine. The mountains here around the marina - especially Skuleberget with its trails - and the sea have that effect on people.

P.P.S. 👉 If you found this guide helpful, please share it with other sailors planning to explore Höga Kusten. You can find it at dockstahavet.se/high-coast-sailor-mini-guide - it's my way of helping fellow sailors discover this special corner of Sweden where mountains meet the sea. Feel free to bookmark it for your next visit or share the link with your sailing friends.
