Having easy meals by the seaside when on holiday on the Höga Kusten

The long walks in the woods, the slopes on the Skuleberget mount, and the breathtaking views of the archipelago are undoubtedly appetizing.

Just as your breakfast requires a good amount of energy before you start exploring the wonders of Skuleskogen National Park, you will remember those delicious sandwiches that you put in your backpack before starting the next stage of the Höga Kusten Leden.

Enjoying your meals by the seaside is a really soothing experience. It's a staple of boathouse living.

The Dock House at the marina is facing east, south-east, and towards the Docksta fjord. In the summer morning, you can't imagine a more suggestive sunny place to have your breakfast or, before dinner, your aperitivo directly outdoors, a few steps from the water on your own pier section.

The dock house's interiors are more basic than those of a home, making your life there simplier and more laid-back.

Meals are fun to prepare in the kitchenett: in this post, are some ideas we've compiled to make it enjoyable.

First, let's take a look at what you have at your disposal.

Having a microwave oven on hand often suffices to prepare meals, even if your kitchen isn't set up for cooking. The microwave is a useful and efficient ally; it allows you to quickly prepare and serve meals in a matter of minutes.

🛒 There are a variety of readily heated, frozen, or prepared meals available in the ICA supermarket, downtown the village. They always require very little preparation; just adhere to the suggested power and timings on the packaging.

For milk and yogurt, fresh water or a couple of cold beers or a bottle of white wine and to store your foods, before they are prepared, there is a refrigerator of 41 liters. It also has a refrigerator cell to better store frozen products.

To roast a slice of bread, or one of the delicious round-focacce that you can find in Sweden, there is an electric toaster.

Into the store, you will also find an infinite selection of dry slices, like Wasa and other crackers that you will not need to heat. With a thread of salted margarine and are ideal either for breakfast or for your snack time.

👉 On the High Coast, you're home to the traditional "tunnbröd" (literally "thin bread"). These Swedish flatbreads have many variants, from the soft and spicy, mildly anise-flavored that you can even roll (it gets frozen and you find it on the fresh bread bench) to the dry and very thin variants (cracker-like in texture). On the crocery shelves, they also come from several local craftsmen; almost every community in the area has one.

With the water boiler, you can prepare a couple of good cup of thè, but there are also other options: you can quickly prepare a hot soup (at the supermarket you can find many tasty varieties in envelope), or you can use boiling water to make one of the lyofilized meals that backpackers carrie during trekking trips.

👉 Another delicious drink is the lyofilized blueberry soup (Blåbär Soppa): full of energy and rich in C vitamin. Have you tried it yet? It's exquisite. The soup can be served warm or cold, depending on your preference. You can serve it either plain or with a dollop of whipped cream on top.

At the Dock House, you have a coffee machine ("DolceGusto" compatible capsules), so, in addition to making a delicious Italian espresso or a longer one, based on your preferences, you can choose from the extensive selection of variants that are now available in practically all supermarkets and specialty shops.

If you like a different hot beverage, like coffee or cappuccino, bring your favorite capsules with you to go with the traditional “Espresso” ones you find when you arrive.

During your holidays on the High Coast, dining “al fresco” under the stunning northern Swedish summer sky with a view of the sea is a unique experience.

Here are some “image ideas” to make your meals at the boathouse truly memorable:

BREAKFAST

The summer's first morning sun rises extremely early, right in front of the marina out to the east. If you'd like, you can also enjoy it while you have breakfast outside on the dock.

This is probably the most important meal of the day. It will provide you with all the energy you will need during the day for the walks and excursions you have planned.

LUNCH

Most of the time, lunch is just a bag of breakfast that gets consumed during the day.

You won't even have access to a drink kiosk when you're walking through a forest or along a path leading to stunning lakes in the middle of a national park, so in your backpack, along with the essential liquid supplies, you should pack everything you'll need for a genuine picnic in the great outdoors or a quick stop to rehydrate and refuel.

APERITIVO

Our piers have a long tradition of serving "aperitivi", and not only on board! The appetizers prepared by a few well-chosen "stuzzichini" will be the moment you will love at the conclusion of an exciting day of hiking, regardless of what you will pair it with—a cup of fresh white wine, a particular craft beer, or your favorite drink.

You can borrow two different kits of glasses: “Wine & Spumante” or “Bier and Drinks”.

DINNER

Dinner is often accompanied by a stunning view of the Docksta fjord, as the endless twilight light appears to never end.

Thankfully, you don't have to spend hours cooking to create a gorgeous supper that will satisfy your appetite.

👉 Classic Swedish meatballs (köttbullar) can be easily prepared from frozen in minutes, in the microwave.

VARIATIONS AROUND COFFEE

🇮🇹 “Affogato al caffè”

Put a tablespoon of vanilla ice cream in a cup and simply pour over a boiling espresso. Serve it and consume it immediately.

🇮🇹 “Caffè con panna”

In the cup of a hot “espresso”, simply add spray whipped cream (espresso is mandatory :)

Where to buy food

Docksta offers excellent shopping; the village's main street has an ICA store, a supermarket, located a few hundred meters from the marina.

ICA Nära Dockstahallen, one of the first stores to open and closes last over the entire week is this one: Mon-Fre 08:00/20:00 - Sat-Sun 10:00/18:00.

P.S. I’m a trail runner. I like to explore new routes with a hiking mindset, especially those on the High Coast. Here below you find what I highlighted in these blog posts.

Three unusual holiday accommodations by the sea on Sweden's High Coast

A great starting point for exploring the Höga Kusten World Heritage Site are these three vacation rentals: a comfortable dock house, a cozy boathouse, and a completely furnished apartment overlooking the sea, all of which face the marina in Docksta.

Docksta is a friendly community with a strong tourist vocation. Easily accessible by car or public transportation (plus, the village is crossed by Stage 5 of the Höga Kusten Leden), it's ideally located for seeing the well-known archipelago along Sweden's coast, and especially the amazing Skuleskogen National Park.

From here, you can even take the daily ferry to the island of Ulvön, which is accessible throughout the summer. In particular, some of the most well-liked locations for nature hikers may be discovered on foot or by bicycle, allowing you to temporarily forget about using your car.

All the "ingredients" that contribute to a holiday being special and unforgettable—like the trails leading to the summit of Skuleberget, the stimulating views from Getvedjeberget, Fäberget, or Vårdkallberget—are therefore all within a few regenerating hours' walk in the Nature.

Starting from a base by the sea affords you an envied view, even if you don't have a boat: this is where the coast pulls, drawing a landscape that isn't entirely marine or mountainous but instead delivers the finest of these kinds of locations, making it somewhat "strange" and exclusively Scandinavian.

Make the most of your trip to the High Coast by renting one of these incredibly distinctive vacation accommodations.

Staying in a traditional Nordic boathouse is a much-loved experience, especially for hikers and travellers. It features a minimal but charming room with one or two beds, preserving the extraordinary building’s connection with the water, which was built to accommodate fishing boats.

You can rent this hiker-friendly, tiny room for one night or more, alone or in a couple. For last-minute reservations and flexible check-in, contact the host via Airbnb for availability.

Have you ever considered sleeping just above the sea, but not in a boat? An ex-darsena who has been converted to spend the night claims to be able to see the sea up close during the summer.

It's a glamorous spot that blends indoor and outdoor spaces, is ideal for couples looking to spend special time by the sea.

This superbly furnished apartment is perfect for a family or couple's vacation and features stunning views of the sea. It is baricentric relative to everything you would like to see while on vacation on the High Coast.

There's a great view of the fjord from the loft bed area. The living area's expansive terrace and wall of windows look out onto the marina and its piers.

These holiday rentals are available for reservations on AIRBNB

A World Heritage Site is just outside your door!

WHAT I HIGHLIGHT:

Sleep by the sea on the Höga Kusten at a dock house above the water

This glamorous dock house will be a less ordinary overnight stay during your next discovery of the High Coast World Heritage.

A fantastic location for lodging: close enough to stroll to Skuleberget Mountain and to readily reach the area's natural surroundings near Skuleskogen National Park.

At the "Dock3", situated within the marina in Docksta, you and your partner will enjoy sleeping OVER the sea and love the merging of the indoors with the outdoors.

This dock house was transformed towards the end of the 1970s (originally it was a fishing boathouse that was built above the water), preserving its character of being at one with the sea.

Under the floor, made of pre-impregnated wooden dock boards, you still see the reflection of the water, and the sound of the surf between the wooden walls serves as music as you sleep 1.5 meters above the sea's surface.

The accommodation is roomy; you have access to more than 40 m2 of inside surface area as well as the similar amount of private space outside, with access to the sea, on your own pier and terrace.

Your bed is undoubtedly the focal point of the sizable living area; it looks eastward out the 3-meter dock window onto the fjord. As if on a boat's deck, you will have an exclusive view of the ocean from your bed.

It is a real double bed (160x200), a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture made specifically for the dock, with comfortable bedding, including pillows, duvets, and additional blankets for more warmth if needed.

You will also enjoy living outside on the seafront by immediately accessing the large portion of the pertinent jetty around the dock. You can step out and start swimming in the water only a few steps away from your door.

This cabin provides an exceptional relationship with the water and the landscape view from the pier: here outdoor and indoor become one.

·

Take note before booking: you will have a glamorous experience, but pay close attention—there won't be any heating inside the dock (only the summer months are suitable for renting it). We also have additional blankets in case the weather decides to deceive you.

·

The spacious cabin's interiors ensure your comfort and freedom.

The building's design is straightforward, as are the traditional Nordic boathouses; inside, there is just a minimal amount of furniture—just what is necessary to enjoy your seaside accommodation—and wood is used to build everything from the walls and ceiling to the floor, which is constructed of pier boards.

There is a 33-square-meter area overlooking the water with sleeping and sitting areas where the bed and sofa are situated.
